The IPad Pro 2020 12.9″ retains its robust, premium build quality as the 2018 edition, except for the following specifications:
1) Slightly heavier at 0.02 pounds
The difference is negligible, you will not find any weight savings.
2) Apple A12Z Bionic (2020) vs A12X Bionic (2018).
According to macrumors, both have the same 8 core CPU, M12 Motion co-processor and a Neural Engine. The only difference is the A12Z has 8 core GPU whereas the A12X has 7 core GPU. However, there is no improvement in processor speed for the A12Z.
3) Rear Camera Dual 12MP + 10MP Ultrawide, LiDAR (2020) vs Rear Camera Single 12MP (2018)
There are two lenses now, 12MP is wide lenses with f/1.8 aperture, while 10MP is ultrawide at f/2.4 aperture. According to many, both cameras work at the same time to give you a better picture. So this is a significant improvement over the 2018 IPad.
LiDAR is an acronym for “Light Detection and Ranging”. In short, it is used for augmented reality (AR), and achieves this by “measuring distances by illuminating the target with laser light and measuring the reflection with a sensor”. This feature is not available on the 2018 IPad.
4) Video 1080p at 240 FPS (2020), Video 720p at 240 FPS (2018)
This refers to slow-motion video support at 240 FPS and a higher resolution of 1080p on the 2020 IPad.
This is a short post as the only significant difference between IPad Pro 2020 and IPad Pro 2018 is the rear camera specification. The 2018 version can also use the same accessories as the IPad Pro 2020, such as the new Magic keyboard.
