Compare Differences Between Samsung A52s and Oneplus 9

This design review summarises the key differences between the A52s and Oneplus 9 that may have significant impact on usage.

Most of the time we do not decide which phone to buy based on which one has the more specifications better than the other. Most users decide based on just a few key specifications, and the final decision could be affected by the price as well.

This appears to be a comparison between a mid-range Samsung phone against the number 2 flagship model from Oneplus. Samsung A52 is a popular mid-range phone, and Samsung is planning a minor CPU upgrade in the new Samsung A52s, which is expected to be released after end Sep 2021. There is a reason why this phone is so popular and it may not mean it is inferior in every way to the Oneplus 9.

Advantages of Samsung A52s Over Oneplus 9

The key advantages listed below are design specifications that Samsung A52 has, but not found on Oneplus 9

  • It has IP67 rating, which means it is dust-tight and protected from water and submersion up to 1m.
  • It has 3.5mm ear jack
  • It has expansion slot for Micro-USB up to 1024GB, or can be used for double SIM.
  • Overall it has slightly better rear cameras than Oneplus 9 except for the Ultra-Wide camera.
  • It has better front camera with 32MP resolution and video capture at 4K, as compared to Oneplus 9’s with 16MP and HD video capture.

Advantages of Oneplus 9 Over Samsung A52s

The key advantages listed below are design specifications that Oneplus 9 that is better than Samsung A52s.

  • The back is Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5, compared to A52 is plastic backing.
  • Support 15W wireless charging and compatible with Qi wireless charging.
  • Super fast charging using Oneplus Warp 65T charger with maximum power output of 65W.
  • USB port is 3.1, which offers much faster data transfer than USB2.0 on the A52.
  • Oneplus 9 rear camera offers 8K video recording, while A52s is up to 4K only.


The price of Samsung A52s is not available at this time, but currently Oneplus 9 is about 25% more expensive than A52 (without the “S”). For the higher price, we would say the biggest reason to select Oneplus 9 would be the fast charging, wireless charging and high resolution video capture on the rear camera.

However, A52s remains a very attractice, mid-tier smartphone with very strong advantages as listed above. There is no clear winner and the choice would be based on individual’s preference and priority. Obviously, one could get the best of both worlds by selecting Samsung S series phones.

As we said, it all boils down to individual preference.

In our case, we prefer “Ultra-Sonic” finger print sensor for more reliable and faster unlocking of phones.  With Covid-19 and mandatory face mask law, face recognition is not convenient. As such, reliable finger print sensor is one of the most-used function because we always need to unlock the phone everytime we need to use it. This is our critical criteria in design reviews, which means if this is not available then the phone would not meet our requirement at all.

The ultra-sonic finger print sensor can read the finger print better than optical, because it is not affected by light, or smudged screens. If you can recall the frustration everytime the finger print sensor used to fail and we have to use the password after 5 failures.
