Review of Tag Heuer Connected 3 vs Apple Watch Series 6 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

Tag Heuer Connected is a smartwatch that fuses traditional elegant design with modern smartwatch electronics. A fixed, traditional tachymeter bezel with faceted titanium lugs and casing houses high-performance sensors and advanced smartwatch functionality for sports, wellness, and communication.

It is hard to compare luxury items with functional tech products, and it feels like comparing apples to oranges. The reason to wear a luxury item is not about the functions and benefits but is about conveying the status of the person wearing the branded watch. It is about the prestige, the designer look, and the price tag.

The price of Tag Heuer Connected is at least $2,500, which is almost 4 to 5 times the price of Apple and Samsung smartwatches.

Nevertheless, we are curious to look deeper and review the differences in design specifications between a luxury smartwatch and the popular smartwatch worn by the masses.

Form Factor[tie_index]Form Factor[/tie_index]

The Tag Heuer Connected is thicker than the Apple Watch by about 3mm, but is roughly the same as the Samsung Galaxy 4, which is also 13.5mm when it includes the sensor at the back of the watch. The thickness of 13.5mm does not feel cumbersome and is quite common for a tachymeter bezel, chronograph watch.

The tachymeter bezel cannot be rotated and is more decorative than serving a function. The Apple watch could not have any rotating bezel because it is a rectangle. The bezel on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 can be rotated, however, we doubt most users would use the rotating bezel often.

There is no IP rating for the Tag Heuer, however, the specification includes water resistance up to 5 ATM or 50m, by referencing the other brands. This is on par with the water-resistance level for most sports watches.

Tag Heuer Connected touchscreen display has almost the same resolution as Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 at 454×454 pixels (326 ppi).

Just like Apple, Tag Heuer did not mention the brand of the scratch-resistant sapphire glass. Only Samsung is open about using Corning Gorilla glass. This is fine, as our experience with the branded Corning Gorilla glass shows that they do not have any advantage over those “brandless” glass on Apple iPhones.

The basic sensors include a compass, accelerometer, gyroscope, optical heart sensor, and also GPS. They have yet to include the more advanced sensors found on the Apple and Samsung such as barometer, blood oxygen, etc. Even then, those functions are quite new and considered high-end functions on Apple and Samsung. Samsung rolled out the Galaxy Active 2 but took more than a year for authority approval, before releasing the ECG patch.

What sensors does the Tag Heuer Connected have?

The Tag Heuer Connect Gen 3 (2020) introduced the compass and heart rate monitor that is missing from the Tag Heuer Connect Gen 2. If you still own the Gen 2, it would make sense to upgrade because of these two essential functions.

The battery capacity of the Tag Heuer Connected is significantly larger in our comparison, but the battery life is similar to Apple Watch 6, which lasted about a full day.

In actual usage, it should normally last longer than a full day unless you are actively using the watch all the time. Most users normally keep the watch on the magnetic charger at the end of each day. Based on experience with Samsung Smartwatches, they do not last as long as the 40 hours claimed in the specifications.

The Tag Heuer Connect has much lower Ram and Storage than Samsung Galaxy Watch 4. It does not have any speaker and the Bezel is fixed unless Galaxy Watch 4 which has a rotating bezel.

The Tag Heuer Connected uses the older Bluetooth 4.1 (LE) for connection to Apple iPhones or Android phones. It does not have 4G but has Wifi and NFC for Google Pay.

While the other sports watches supported many sports activities, Tag Heuer Connect only has running, cycling, and golf. If you need a smartwatch for all 90 sports, you should afford to purchase a second smartwatch with all those functions.
