As the keyboard size and keys are reduced, the remaining type of key configuration becomes more unpredictable, as there are many possibilities. It is up to the manufacturer to determine what keys to keep that will attract buyers for their keyboard, depending on their needs. Some of these could be customised for particular purposes, such as military uses.
